Smiles from the Heart

Todays blog is an entry by me, Michelle as this week it is my turn.

I struggle with how to start to write this and share this very personal aspect of this part of our cancer journey, an update of Richard and of our family.  To date, we have been fighting so hard to battle this disease and enter into this next phase with strength, dignity, with gratitude for all we have, and yet always still with hope.Things have become increasingly difficult as the disease progresses and Richard's health declines, especially over the last few days.  As you know he loves music, and so I often play music while we are sitting together and one of his favourite artists is Anne Murray.  As I worked through her playlist, one of the songs came on called "You Needed Me".  To be honest, I couldn't hold it together because the lyrics were as if they were written just for us and just for this moment,  reflecting upon everything Richard brings to my life and what he means to me.

One of the very private things, is that throughout all of this, Richard wanted to make sure that I would not be burdened with so many of the details that come in life and management of our household and that everything is set and to give me strength to stand alone, when that day comes.  I have the pleasure to care for Richard with all my heart, with love, with dignity and respect for the man he is.  As the song goes -You Needed Me (but I also needed you).

In addition to music, I do read out all of your comments on facebook, messenger and email to him.  It gives him great pleasure, to hear your messages on how his thoughts and experiences resonate with you, and give you comfort in some small way.  Recently it was a dear colleague's birthday from his first year of teaching, and several  photos of the whole group of staff of that year were posted, circa 1990/1.  I enlarged the photos on my phone and we looked through all the people in the photo, and reminisced about different stories from way back then.  He really enjoyed it and remembered every face. It brought a smile to his face and also to mine.

Although Richard isn't able to be on social media and answer your messages directly, he has assigned me as his chief "secretary" and I am happy to share any messages and stories with him.   We love to see and read the comments.  Sometimes these memories are private and not to be posted on facebook or as a blog comment.  I do encourage you to send them through as a DM or as an email - I will pick them up and make sure he hears them.

I know that sharing stories and remembering a life well lived and the impact he had on others is very comforting to him and brings a smile to his face.

Thank you for bringing a smile to my heart and to that of our family.  This is especially dear to us now, as Richard is entering into Hospice Care and we focus on maintaining his comfort at this stage of our journey.

Love Always Michelle and family XOX

Supporting My Local Hospital & Cancer Centre

No update to share as of yet on my biopsy results. My oncologist called me today to let me know that the lab is reanalyzing the sample. The results must be really close and they want to be totally sure of the results as this will determine which next path I will take in my cancer treatment.

Supporting My Local Hospital- Southlake Regional Health Centre

I am so fortunate to have a hospital in my local community that has a regional cancer centre attached. This has meant the world to me, as I can attend appointments, tests and treatments with limited worry and relative ease. No long commutes, hefty parking fees or hours on the road going to and from treatments. This also means that my family is always close by. A blessing for sure. I am so fortunate so I want to ensure that others who may need our hospital, can get the same support that I am currently receiving, especially from the Stronach Cancer Centre with excellent, modern and up to date facilities and the wonderful, helpful caring staff.

In my previous post, Supporting Cancer Research, I talked about the various cancer charities that I have supported over the years, not knowing that one day, I would myself be needing to rely on these resources for my own personal health. Our family had planned to participate in the Southlake 5K Run/Walk last year. Unfortunately due to COVID this event had to be cancelled. I am happy to announce that the Erdmann's have signed up again this year for the virtual version of this event. We invite you to join us!

This years event is called Run for Southlake Virtual Challenge. Michelle and I have created our own Virtual Challenge team called Richard's Roadrunners. We are always looking for people to join our team and cause. Between April 12th and May 9th our team have committed to focus on being physically active, supporting our personal wellbeing by eating well, being physically active, building our walking endurance & going the distance. We hope to record at least 40 km of walking during the four week event.

We invite you to join us!   You can find our team registration information here. We would love to have you join us virtually and set up your own goals. Lets achieve this together and raise money at the same time. Alternatively, if you can't commit to being apart of our team but would like to make a donation to the cause, you can do so here:

Donation to Run for Southlake Virtual Challenge. Please be sure to donate under our team name Richard's Roadrunners. Our goal is to raise one thousand dollars for Southlake Regional Health Centre. We are almost halfway there already! Thanks to those that have already sponsored me, Michelle or our team. We really appreciate it.

We will keep you updated on our progress in an upcoming blog post, once the event has begun.

Thanks everyone and get your runners on!

Beep! Beep! Go Roadrunners!

Uncertain Times

Wow! What a week!

I guess my questions from last week's blog SCAN-xiety have been answered! Social distancing and staying at home are the new norm for all of us, and it seems will remain that way for the foreseeable future. We are happy to report that we have not joined the frenzy for toilet paper hoarding and will not be joining the lines at Costco any time soon! We will be trying online grocery shopping again, doing lots of home cooking/baking and occasionally supporting local restaurants through take out.

How life has changed so quickly for all of us. Just last week we were free to come and go as we pleased. This week, we are all being asked to respect social distancing, to stay at home, avoiding going out into public unless absolutely necessary. We can view this as either a bother or a blessing. As a family, we choose to consider this a blessing! This has given us more time as a family. It has forced us to slow down. It has provided us with time to reflect (and even time for a few naps!) I must admit that we have been staying in our jammies for most of the morning. Another new normal I guess!

It is definitely a scary time for all of us but especially for those of us that are immune compromised.

Treatments and appointments must continue regardless of the growing pandemic around us! On Monday I went for an echocardiogram at the hospital. To be honest, Michelle and I were a little concerned about going to the hospital at all under the circumstances. When we arrived, we were greeted by two nurses and a security guard in full protective gear. We were asked a few questions, given some hand sanitizer and sent to the welcome centre to register. I have to say that I have never seen the hospital so empty and quiet. It was a bit eery. It is usually bustling with people and activity. My paperwork was ready as soon as we arrived on the second floor. Even when we got to the waiting room (which is usually packed with people), it was almost completely empty. I was seen almost immediately and we were in an out of the hospital, in less than 45 minutes. A new record I believe!

Next week, I need to return to the cancer centre for my maintenance treatment. I must admit that I am a little nervous about it. Not about the treatment itself, as I have had two already, but nervous about actually going into the hospital. I know that they will have safeguards in place, but I am still a little concerned about gathering with others, especially as the COVID-19 statistics keep increasing.  All cancer patients are immune compromised (and probably they and their loved ones all have the same worry). We must remember that hospital staff (our local heroes) are dealing with patients every day. They are putting their personal safety at risk each day, to help those of us in need. Our treatments are essential. My concerns and worries are not really an option at this point.

I have always been impressed with the medical staff, support workers and volunteers at the hospital/cancer centre but I must say again how thankful I am for their courage and devotion to all of us that are ill. We can not thank them enough for their efforts.

On the home front, we are all managing well. All I can say is thank goodness for the internet! All of us have been surfing the net (probably more than we should be) but for the most part it has been a great distraction from the fear and anxiety that can creep in, if we let it. We are trying to limit the amount of time watching the news as this activity seems to strike more fear and anxiety rather than calm us down. We are going for a daily walk around the nature trails in Newmarket (keeping a safe social distance from others and trying to go out at non peak times). We are so fortunate to have this trail system in our town. These daily nature breaks help to lift our spirits, provide some much needed exercise and helps to reduce the chance of cabin fever setting in. A bonus side effect of self distancing and staying home for the most part has been that we are making more homemade meals (fresh bread, stews, soups, etc.) and having less take out. We even have been taking turns as a family making dinners. A second surprising bonus has been that for the most part, we have not yet got on each others nerves. I guess moments of self isolation (ie. the kids spending time in their rooms) has helped. Time will tell if this all changes. We will keep you posted. LOL.

Stay safe, stay strong! Stay positive!
